Can a Used Module Be Programmed to a Vehicle?
It’s a pretty common question, especially now, when there are delays/shortages in the supply of new modules and some modules for “outdated” (basically pre-2020) vehicles are on back-order (meaning it might take forever to get one).
There’s no definite answer, however here are some clues.
What makes a difference between a used module and a new one?
- Software that is loaded into the module
- Data stored in the module (i.e. immo data, car config etc)
- Programmed VIN number
So, let’s sort it out. Software is easy to solve - just flash a proper one and that’s it.
Not so easy with data. Generally immo data/car config could be overwritten, but there’s a catch:
- BCM - if a used module came from a vehicle that had an alarm armed - it would be required to fix the EEPROM, which is only possible by opening the module and de-soldering/re-soldering the EEPROM chip. BCM with armed alarm refuses to cooperate.
- Starting from 2022 BCM might be “Locked” - meaning an extra level of protection against vehicle thefts - these can’t be reused. Same goes for RFA modules.
- Some modules might be totally unhappy/uncooperative to switch hands of drive: Power Steering Control Module, some ABS modules. While it’s still possible to make these happy - it requires additional skills and efforts.
Now the VIN
Most of the time the VIN would just trigger a DTC for incorrect VIN and… that’s it - no warning lights, nothing.
